Institute of Functional Materials Chemistry

A leading scientific center in Ukraine in the field of chemistry and chemical materials science.

About Institute

The Institute of Functional Materials Chemistry, a part of the SSI "Institute for Single Crystals" of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, began its work in 2005 and has since grown into a powerful center for fundamental and applied research.

The Institute's scientists conduct world-class interdisciplinary research in the fields of modern chemistry and chemical materials science, developing functional materials for a wide range of applications, nano- and supramolecular systems, as well as cutting-edge chemical theories, approaches, and methods.

Key scientific achievements include the development of a strategy for chemo-controlled cyclocondensations, a new approach to describing molecular crystals based on energy vector diagrams, and the creation of fluorescent probes and markers for medical diagnostics and therapy. The Institute has also developed several pharmaceutical products currently manufactured in Ukraine, along with regulatory documentation in the pharmaceutical sector.

Among the promising research directions are the development of innovative high-efficiency sorbents and extractants for the selective removal of toxic substances, microextraction systems based on non-ionic surfactants and eutectic mixtures for analytical chemistry, as well as microbiological studies.

Selected Activities
Erasmus+ BOOSTSCIENCE Project
Since November 2025, researchers of IFMC have joined the Erasmus+ BOOSTSCIENCE project aimed at improving the quality of education in natural sciences, particularly chemistry and biology.
The goal of the project is to develop an innovative study module for master’s students focused on fostering entrepreneurial and interdisciplinary competences.
NRFU Project "SupraKha"
A team of scientists from the IFMC received grant support from the NRFU to conduct research in the fields of materials science and supramolecular chemistry, and to establish a shared research facility at IFMC. The projects main aim is to develop new materials based on host-guest supramolecular systems for biomedical and veterinary applications.
Kharkiv Chemical Seminar
The seminar was initiated by Valentyn Chebanov in April 2022, during the peak of Russia's full-scale aggression. Today, it provides a platform for leading scientists from around the world, including Nobel Laureates, to share their expertise and research findings, helping Ukrainian researchers stay informed about cutting-edge scientific discoveries.
